Android Phone Not Detected by Windows via USB? Here’s How to Fix It
A practical connection checklist for technicians.
Is your Android phone charging over USB but missing from Windows File Explorer? Start with the data cable and the phone’s USB settings. If Windows shows a device error or ADB cannot see your phone, use the checks below to find where the connection is failing.
Quick fixes for Android USB connection problems
| What you see | What to try first |
|---|---|
| Phone charges, but no USB notification appears | Try a known working data cable and another USB port. |
| USB notification appears, but the phone is missing from File Explorer | Unlock the phone and select File transfer. |
| Device Manager shows a yellow warning icon | Open the device’s Properties and check the reported error. |
| ADB shows unauthorized | Unlock the phone and approve the debugging prompt for your own computer. |
1. Check the USB cable and port
Some USB cables can charge a phone without transferring data. Try one you have already used to move files. Connect it directly to another USB port on the PC. If the problem continues, try the phone and cable on a second computer to help narrow down the cause.
2. Switch to File transfer mode
- Unlock the phone and connect it to your Windows PC.
- Tap the USB notification on the phone. It may say Charging this device via USB.
- Choose File transfer. The exact wording can vary by model.
- Open File Explorer → This PC and look for your phone.
For more details, see Google’s Android file transfer guide.
3. Check whether Windows detects the phone
Open Device Manager and watch the device list while you unplug and reconnect the phone. Check Portable Devices or Other devices. If a new entry has a yellow warning icon, right-click it and open Properties to read the error.
If you are setting up ADB on a Samsung Galaxy device and need the Windows driver, follow our Samsung USB Driver download and installation guide. For other brands, check the manufacturer driver list from Android Developers.
4. Fix ADB detection or authorization
For ADB work, enable USB debugging in Developer options. Open a terminal in the Android SDK Platform-Tools folder and run:
adb devices
- device — ADB sees the phone and the connection is authorized.
- unauthorized — Unlock the phone, approve the debugging prompt for your own computer, and run the command again.
- No device listed — Check USB debugging, the cable and port, and whether Windows detects the phone.
For photos and ordinary files, use File transfer mode. For development and debugging, see the official ADB guide.
